BACKI decided in March 2020 when the Drawing II class that I was taking had to move online, that I would hunker down in my pandemic cave and keep COVID from catching me. I brought out my boxes of materials that I had stashed away in 1977 through 1979 and took stock of my inventory. I brought a table that I made into my room and setup my camera. On April 9, 2020 I took my first digital photograph of a collage made entirely from these old materials.
I used most of this past year and a half experimenting. I've rebuilt my rig at least seven times, developed new catagories of materials, and tried various formats. My goal has always been to make very large pieces. I did a little research and discovered stitching. I now use up to 300 photos in a single piece, some are as large as 25 by 8 feet.
About five months ago I was reflecting on what it means to be seventy years old. I realized that for me, it's a new begining. I started thinking about how to bring my art to market and devised a very ambitious business plan. I know that it is going to take a lot of years, so I have decided that each year will be an episode. This year following my seventieth birthday has been the begining. Episode 0.
With the approach of my birthday and the the begining of Episode 1, I want to document what I have learned this past year. My idea was to make a list of the people that I would give my art to. I owe a debt of gratitue to each one of you. My list is twenty-four names.
This amateurish web site contains all twenty-four pieces and the first name of each owner. Collectively it's a work in progress. I need to figure out how to mint these into NFT's and give each of you your files. This is a prototype for my future episodes.
In 2022 I plan to use this format again to document my progress. This time it will be all one piece, a gigantic digital art book containing 24 pages. Watch my style evolve. These are a simplified version of what I expect to do.
